Reference Selection & Coaching

Many people know that reference checking has now become a key determinant in federal government job competitions. It takes place either before a pool of qualified candidates is finalized or before an individual job offer is made.

Most candidates, however, do not try to play a part in their own reference-checking process. Unfortunately, this results in a lost opportunity at a crucial stage in highly competitive, increasingly detailed hiring exercises.

Whether in line for an entry-level government job or a promotion up to or at the EX level, candidates will find that our Reference Selection and Coaching service shows them how to get involved by priming their referees to help them properly—not simply relying on them to do so in the typical off-the-cuff, scattershot manner.

Coaching Overview

To help you steer your reference-check effectively, our 1.5-hour session provides:

  • insights on how arcane, behaviourally-based reference processes actually work
  • tips for selecting appropriate referees and presenting them on paper in a way that connects with your CV/resume
  • timelines to consider regarding when to follow up with your referees
  • a checklist of what to provide referees to equip them to help you, and coaching on how to explain specialized reference-checking requirements to them
  • sample materials showing reference-checking methods used across government in competitions at all levels
  • a proven formula to help develop answers with your referees that get you high scores
  • a strategy for working with referees to enable them to deliver written and oral examples of your competency-based experiences that reflect Statement of Merit requirements

Who Can Benefit from the Coaching?

Candidates in and outside government who need to understand reference-checking methods and help their referees respond quickly and effectively with precise answers to questionnaires and telephone follow ups will benefit from our service—and significantly improve their chance to succeed at the final stage of evaluation.
